It’s About Time

Welcome to my first post.

The secret of getting ahead is getting started. ~ Mark Twain

For many of you who have known me longer than a year or two, I’m quite certain that the moment you realized I was actually writing something, the title of this post blazed through your mind. I know…I said it myself.

It’s about time.

Believe me, being a writer who doesn’t write is much more frustrating for me than I care to admit. Spending hours–days–staring at empty journals, blinking cursers, and blank pieces of paper, utterly devoid of inspiration, is enough to cause one to collect the entire lot and pitch it into the recycle bins, computer and all.

The thought occurred to me many times. Many times. However, in an uncharacteristically focused moment of clarity, I decided to combine prayer and self-reflection to see if there was anything I could adjust, change, remove, or update to reignite some sparks of inspiration.

That’s when I saw it. No question. No doubt. I saw one of the primary problems plain as day.

It’s about time.

Time management, more specifically. Time management and choices. Choices strongly influenced by many factors, most of which stir emotion in me; and rather than dealing with pesky emotions, I retreated into other pursuits like watching YouTube & gaming. Why? Mostly because they were safe and mindless activities that required little of me, especially feelings.

After this revelation, I started by repenting to God for retreating from reality a bit farther than is healthy. I then resolved to make some changes in my day-to-day routines, exchanging excess escapism to make room for creativity. Unfortunately, days and weeks went by with no notable difference.

So what happened today? Why am I able to post this?

I don’t really know, to be honest. I just woke up this morning, and something was different. My morning routine was different (in that I had one). My focus was different (in that I had some–a miracle in light of my treatments). My desire to at least try – perhaps fail, but at least try – to write was there. Finally.

If you’ve read this far, I thank you for participating in my return to writing despite the obvious dust and cobwebs. I admit this isn’t on par with my best writing, but as they say, “you gotta start somewhere”; and since this post has taken me most of the day, I’m going to go ahead and post it. It’s better than posting nothing, right? I mean, after all…

It’s about time.
